Instructions

Data Domain Operating System (DDOS) 7.x Supported Platforms

DDOS 7.2 and Above DD3300, DD4200, DD4500, DD6300, DD6800, DD6900, DD7200, DD9300, DD9400, DD9500, DD9800, DD9900, and DDVE

MDU PROCESS NOT REQUIRED IF:

DD is running:

  • DDOS 6.1.2.70: Single-hop direct upgrade is possible only until DDOS 7.8 or below.
  • DDOS 6.2.1.x
  • DDOS 7.2.x and above

Ⅰ. Introduction:

  • DDOS 7.x does not support Archive Tier, so upgrading is not supported on systems using Archive Tier.
  • DD systems on DDOS 6.0 or lower should be upgraded to DDOS 6.2.1.x and then can upgrade directly to 7.x.
  • DD systems on DDOS 6.1 can upgrade to 7.7 directly using MDU in a single hop. For upgrade to 7.10 and beyond customers must perform two-hop upgrades.
  • MDU installation is needed only for upgrades that use the DD GUI for uploading a DDOS RPM.
  • MDU installation does not require any system downtime or reboots and can be performed while DD is in production and running Backups.
  • A duplicate entry of previous 'DDOS version - Build#' will be made in upgrade history after successful MDU installation.

If the below upgrade paths are not followed, then this may apply: Data Domain: upload of DDOS RPM file using GUI (Data Domain System Manager) can fill up /ddr partition

NOTE:
  1. Upgrade paths present in the KB are up to date and supersede any Read Me or Release Notes.
  2. MDU upgrade should be completed even before uploading the DDOS RPM package to DDGUI.
  3. For HA systems, uploading and starting MDU upgrade only on Active node upgrades both Standby and Active node.

Follow the upgrade path based on the currently installed DDOS version:

  1. DD systems on DDOS 6.0 or lower should be upgraded to DDOS 6.2.1.x and then can upgrade directly to 7.x.
  2. The single node/DDVE upgrade path for systems running DDOS 6.1.x but lower than 6.1.2.70 is summarized below:
    1. DDOS 6.1.x ⇨ mdu-upgrade-bundle-6.1-releases.rpm ⇨ DDOS 7.7 ⇨ DDOS 7.10 and beyond.
  3. The single node/DDVE upgrade path for systems running DDOS 6.2.x but lower than 6.2.1.0* is summarized below:
    1. DDOS 6.2.x ⇨ mdu-upgrade-bundle-6.2-releases.rpm ⇨ DDOS 7.x
      * Contains DD GUI fixes present in MDU.
  4. The single node/HA/DDVE upgrade path for systems running DDOS lower than 7.0.0.20* or 7.1.0.20* is summarized below:
    1. DDOS 7.0 ⇨ mdu-upgrade-bundle-7.0-releases.rpm ⇨ DDOS 7.x
    2. DDOS 7.1 ⇨ mdu-upgrade-bundle-7.1-releases.rpm ⇨ DDOS 7.x
  5. HA node upgrade path for systems running DDOS lower than 6.1.2.70* path is summarized below:
    1. DDOS 6.1.x ⇨ DDOS 6.2.1.x* ⇨ DDOS 7.x
  6. HA node upgrade path for systems running DDOS lower than 6.2.1.0* path is summarized below:
    1. DDOS 6.2.x (Active HA node) ⇨ mdu-upgrade-bundle-6.2-releases.rpm ⇨ DDOS 7.x

* Contains DD GUI fixes present in MDU.

Ⅱ. Packages:

Important Notes:

  1. Read DDOS Release Notes for detailed upgrade instructions.
  2. Only the active node of HA can be used for the upgrade. Do NOT choose to install from a standby HA node.
  3. If a WARNING message appears while installing an MDU RPM like: "WARNING RPM has unknown architecture," ignore it. This has no impact on the workflow.
  4. If the UI or CLI alerts of a system reboot during the application of an MDU, ignore it.
  5. When performing MDU installations using the DD UI, if the installation has not completed after 5 minutes, refresh the Maintenance > System page and check the upgrade status.
