Symptoms

The following commands show the counter incrementing for out of service/admin ports with SFP inserted:

#show logging onboard
#show hardware internal errors

Counter incrementing:

IP_FCMAC_CNT_STATS_ERRORS_RX_BAD_WORDS_FROM_DECODER

No known impact found due to this.

Cause

An "admin down" or "out of service" FC port with an FC "SFP inserted from only applies to the following MDS line cards.

Line cards (LC) or Switches affected:

  • Gen 4: DS-X9232-256K9 and DS-X9248-256K9
  • Gen 5: DS-X9448-768K9 module of M97xx Chassis
  • MDS 9250i/MDS 9148s/MDS 9396s Fabric Switches

Any other LC or switch is not affected.

Resolution

Workaround:
Following are the workarounds:

  1. If the port is out of service, bring it in service and enable it as below.

    mds-01(config)# int FC x/y
    mds-01(config-if)# no out-of-service
    mds-01(config-if)# no shut
  2. If the port is in Administratively down?, enable it as below.

    mds-01(config)# int FC x/y
    mds-01(config-if)# no shut
  3. Remove the "SFP" from the affected port and it must be left out until the fix is available.

The code has been changed to ignore these "BAD_WORDS" now when the interface is admin down (shut) status.

Resolution:
The Bug fix codes have been changed to ignore these "BAD_WORDS" when the interface is admin down (shut) status.

The fix is to upgrade the switches to NX-OS v6.2(19) OR v8.1(1)
