2) Verify the current setting
> use CLI
>>isi ndmp settings list
> use GUI
>> use GUI > Data Protection > Backup > NDMP Settings
3) modify the dma setting.
If not other application needs the dma set to anything other than generic
> Use CLI
>> log in as root on the Isilon
>> verify the dma setting: "isi ndmp settings list"
>> change dma: "isi ndmp settings set dma generic"
> use GUI
>> use GUI > Data Protection > Backup > NDMP Settings
>> set the dma properly and save the setting.
If another application needs the Isilon to have a dma setting other than generic.
> add an environment variable in the avndmp.cmd file.
>> use CLI
>>> on the Avamar NDMP accelerator
>>> in the /usr/local/avamar/var/CLIENT_NAME directory
>>> create/edit avndmp.cmd
>>>> add the following on a line by itself.
>>>> --env=HIST=D
>>> this will take effect with the next client backup.
>>> and only in effect until the backup process is running
1) Initial backup/ level 0 runs fine
> following incremental hang early and make no progress.
2) Initial backup/level 0 runs find
>following incremental backup completes
> can not restore from the backup
3) incremental backups run slow or complete with various errors.
> may include data not found
> communications errors

Cause
Avamar requires the Isilon DMA to be set to generic.
You can check this setting from the Isilon command line.
Log into the Isilon cluster as root
run command
isi ndmp settings list
We would expect to see the following:
isi ndmp settings list
Setting Value
------------------------------------
port 10000
dma generic
Before this can be corrected if it is not set to generic, you must know the environment.
Some other applications that use the Isilon may require DMA be set to generic and will not function
if DMA set to generic.

Resolution
If the dma setting are changed, a new level 0 must be forced.
The previous backups created under the incorrect dma will not not be usable for data recovery.
