Instructions

Currently, PPDM does not support the backup of CIFS shares over backup interface for PowerStore and Unity.
This is due to a limitation on the NAS side, which is documented for PowerStore:

Information

On the Unity side:

Edit NAS interface

In one scenario, a customer has two subnets defined, 10.34.45.x for Production data, and 10.34.44.x for backup data.

The PPDM appliance was originally deployed on 10.34.44.x subnet. This means it was already on the backup LAN.

In this use case, Unity does not support CIFS backup over backup interface. The interface defined on the Unity side on backup LAN 10.34.44.x MUST be defined with a PRODUCTION role at the Unity side.

As per the tests performed, PPDM uses the first network interface that is configured on the NAS side.
Take an example where the NAS has NIC1s through NIC 10, and if bck LAN is NIC7.
In order to force the use of backup LAN by PPDM, the following actions must be performed:
  1. Remove all NIC interfaces from NAS side.
  2. Run a discovery of NAS from PPDM, so no NIC is detected.
  3. On the Unity side, configure NIC7, or whatever your backup interface is in the first place, and assign a PRODUCTION role.
  4. Run a discovery of NAS from PPDM, so it detects NAS backup interface only.
  5. On the NAS side, reconfigure all the network interfaces.
