Updating to Ubuntu 24.04 stops the webcam from working
Precision 5480 MWS owners may report that the webcam stops working after they update from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to 24.04.
The integrated webcam is working fine on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and only stops working if you update to the latest revision.
The Precision 5480 MWS is sold with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS installed.
Cause
The Ubuntu 24.04 operating system does not support the Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI) webcam. The integrated webcam on the Precision 5480 MWS is a MIPI webcam.
Resolution
Ubuntu and Canonical advise that the Ubuntu 24.04 operating system is adding support for the MIPI webcam by the end of May 2024.
Dell Technologies recommends that you remain on the original operating system sold with the laptop. You should always ensure that a new operating system supports your current level of hardware before you attempt to update that operating system:
