Symptoms
There are two modes for the media or function keys located at the top of the keyboard:
- Mode 1: Function Key Mode - Keys operate as F1 to F12.
- Mode 2: Media Key Mode - Keys perform media functions like volume up and down, Insert, so on
To access a function from the other mode, press Fn + [the key]. When the keyboard is in Media Key Mode on an XPS 16 9640, the Insert key works without issues. However, when in Function Key Mode, there is no dedicated Insert key. Although pressing Fn + Insert should theoretically activate the Insert function, it does not work.
Affected Platform:
- XPS 16 9640
Cause
This is due to the BIOS issue.
Resolution
The engineering department is working on a fix to be released in BIOS version 1.15.0 and later. The updated BIOS is posted to the computer's support page once it is made available in July 2025.
Workaround:
- Press FN+ESC to switch captive touch function row from F1 - F12 to Multimedia control key, making Insert visible by default.
- Connect an external keyboard.
