Keyboard Customization Missing in Dell Display and Peripheral Manager
Summary: Learn about what to do if keyboard customization options for programmable keys do not display correctly in Dell Display and Peripheral Manager.
Symptoms
A keyboard customization issue may occur on systems using Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM) for Windows version 2.2.1 with affected Dell keyboards.
During the first connection of a supported Dell keyboard, the programmable key actions may not appear when opening the device settings page in Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM).
When a supported keyboard is connected and recognized correctly, the device settings page displays the programmable keys and allows actions to be assigned.
When this issue occurs, if the keyboard is being connected for the first time, the programmable action keys may be missing from the device settings page. The keys cannot be configured when this happens.
This behavior affects only the initial connection scenario. The same behavior may recur after DDPM is uninstalled and reinstalled. It can also happen after the operating system is reinstalled and DDPM is installed again.
Affected Software:
- Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (version 2.2.1)
Affected Peripherals:
- Dell Pro Compact Silent Keyboard and Mouse - KM555
- Dell Pro Keyboard KB500
Affected Operating Systems:
- Windows
Cause
A communication problem between the DDPM application and the keyboard hardware during the initial connection process causes this issue.
Resolution
Long-term Solution:
The engineering department is working on a fix to be released in Dell Display and Peripheral Manager version 2.2.2.X. The updated Dell Display and Peripheral Manager version is posted to the Dell Display and Peripheral Manager Dell Support page once it is made available. Dell Display and Peripheral Manager is expected to be released in the middle of June 2026.
Workaround:
Use the following workaround to restore the programmable key options in DDPM:
- Reconnect the USB dongle.
- Turn the keyboard power switch off and then on again.
- Restart the computer.
After these steps are completed, reopen DDPM and verify that the programmable action keys are visible in the keyboard's device settings page.
If the issue occurs again, repeat the same workaround steps.
