Deploying the Cyber Recovery solution to Google Cloud Platform

Use the Terraform template to deploy the Cyber Recovery software to the Google Cloud Platform.

Prerequisites

Ensure that all the prerequisites that are described in Chapter 2 are met, including:

  • The Terraform template (main.tf) is available.
  • A JSON key file is available, if using service account authorization.
  • A Google Cloud Platform project has been created.

About this task

The template is deployed by using Terraform, which is available from the Google Cloud Platform cloud shell.

Performing the following steps takes approximately 15 minutes.

Steps

  1. Log in to the Google Cloud portal.
  2. Click The image shows the right arrow icon. on the right of the menu bar to open the cloud shell window.
  3. Create a directory for the deployment.
Each deployment requires its own directory.
  4. Upload the Terraform template and the JSON key file to the deployment directory.
    1. Click Open Editor on the Cloud Shell terminal window menu bar.
A view of the directory structure is displayed on the left.
    2. Click File > Upload Files and in the Open window, select the main.tf and the JSON key file.
The template and key files are uploaded to the deployment directory.
    3. Click Open Terminal on the Cloud Shell terminal window menu bar to return to the terminal session, ensuring that you are in the deployment directory.
  5. Run the following Terraform command to initialize the directory:
    terraform init
  6. Run the following Terraform commands to format the template file and verify that the syntax is correct:
    terraform fmt
    terraform validate
  7. Run the following Terraform command and then complete the parameter queries that are described in the following table:
    terraform apply
Table 1. Parameter fields for creating a deploymentThe table lists the parameters in the Terraform template that are used to create the required resources.
    Parameter Description
Credential file The path to the JSON key file that includes the Google credentials for the service account
NOTE:You can omit this parameter; you will be prompted to authenticate with gCloud authentication at the end of this procedure. In this case, your user account must be assigned the Owner role.
Project ID The Google Cloud Platform project ID
NOTE:Ensure that you enter the project ID and not the project name.
Region The Google Cloud Platform region in which the Cyber Recovery solution will be deployed
Zone The Google Cloud Platform zone in the specified region in which the Cyber Recovery solution will be deployed
Prefix A prefix for resource names in Google Cloud Platform
NOTE:The prefix must be 11 lowercase characters or less.
Subnet 1 The CIDR range for the jump host subnet
Subnet 2 The CIDR range for the DDVE and Cyber Recovery management host subnet
Subnet 3 The CIDR range for the DDVE replication subnet
Production client The CIDR range for the client system that accesses the jump host
The command provides a summary of the resources that will be deployed.
  8. If you did not provide a credential file in step 7, click Authorize in the Authorize Cloud Shell dialog window. Otherwise, go to the following step.
  9. Type yes and press Enter to confirm that you want to proceed.
If you do not type yes, the deployment is canceled.
The parameters and the Terraform template create the required resources. A summary of the deployed resources is displayed.
  10. Optionally, after the deployment is completed, from the Google Cloud portal:
    1. Go to Compute Engines > VM instances to see the Cyber Recovery management host, DDVE, and jump host instances that were deployed.
    2. Go to VPC network > VPC networks to see the networks and corresponding subnets that were deployed.
Note that network-1 includes two subnets, and network-2 includes one subnet.
    3. Click a specific network, click FIREWALLS, and then click the firewall rules link.
All the firewall rules allocated by the template are listed.

Results

The resources for the Cyber Recovery solution are deployed.

Next steps
