1. Troubleshooting 091-XXX Errors

If the Dell laser printer receives a 091-402, 091-935, 901-972, 091-912 Print Head Device (PHD) end of life error. You can try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the error.

Power cycle the printer:

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Turn the printer on.
  4. Determine if the issue still occurs.

If the error returns, the PHD should be replaced. Should the error continue after the PHD replacement, follow the troubleshooting steps below for the given error codes.

2. 091-402 / 901-935 Replace PHD Now Error

  1. Remove the packing tape from the PHD.
    1. Open the front cover.
    2. Put a piece of paper on the transfer belt to protect it from scratches and from light damage. Do not cover the left and right of the belt guards with the paper.
    3. Rotate the four stoppers of the PHD counterclockwise 90 degrees to release the locks (Figure 1).

    4. Remove the PHD unit toward you by pulling it by the left and right handles.
    5. Lift up the PHD unit from the printer. Be careful to avoid scratching the transfer belt.
    6. Remove the packing tape by pulling straight out (Figure 2).

    7. Reinsert the PHD.
    8. Close the front cover.
  2. If removing the packing tapes did not resolve the problem, reseat the PHD.

3. 091-972 Insert PHD Unit Error

  1. Remove and reseat the PHD.
    1. Open the front cover.
    2. Put a piece of paper on the transfer belt to protect it from scratches and from light damage. (Do not cover the left and right of the belt guards with the paper.)
    3. Rotate the four stoppers of the PHD counter clock wise 90 degrees to release the locks (Figure 1).
    4. Remove the PHD unit toward you by pulling it by the left and right handles.
    5. Lift up the PHD unit from the printer. Be careful to avoid scratching the transfer belt.
    6. To reinsert the PHD unit, follow steps 3 through 5 in reverse.

4. 091-912 Check PHD Unit Error

  1. 1.Remove the packing tape and protective cover from the PHD. Also remove PHD and Fuser and run test without these parts.
    1. Open the front cover.
    2. Put a piece of paper on the transfer belt to protect it from scratches and from light damage. Do not cover the left and right of the belt guards with the paper.
    3. Rotate the four stoppers of the PHD counterclockwise 90 degrees to release the locks (Figure 1).
    4. Remove the PHD unit toward you by pulling it by the left and right handles.
    5. Lift up the PHD unit from the printer. Be careful to avoid scratching the transfer belt.
    6. Remove the protective sheet from the front of the PHD unit. (Figure 2)
    7. Remove the packing tape from the PHD unit. (Figure 2)
    8. Keep PHD removed from the printer until the test is done.
    9. Pull the lever of the fuser assembly to release the lock (Figure 3).

    10. Disengage the connector of the fuser assembly by pulling the right side of the fuser assembly toward you with the lever released (Figure 4).

    11. Lift up the fuser assembly to remove it from the printer.
      Keep the Fuser out of the printer until the test is done.
    12. Close the front cover.
  2. Run Diagnostics on the Sub Motor.

    Using the Operator Panel on the printer:
    1. Hold down the up and down arrow buttons on the printer and power the printer on.
    2. Release your fingers from the keys when the message Please wait... appears.
    3. When the Customer Mode menu appears with *Printer and FAX/Scanner displayed, press the Select button to choose Printer.
    4. After Please wait... appears briefly, press the select button to choose DIOT Diag.
    5. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to Digital Output, then press the Select button.
    6. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to DO-5, then press the Select button. (The display changes from DO-5 READY to DO-5 EXEC and a motor noise is heard with no grinding or banging.)
    7. Press the Cancel button to stop the diagnostic.
    8. When the display changes to DO-5 READY, turn the printer off then back on to leave Customer Mode and return to normal printer functions.

    Using the Tool Box:
    1. Open the Tool Box and go to the Diagnostics tab.
    2. Choose the Machine Check option.
    3. Click Fuser Motor Operation Check, then click Start to begin the diagnostic.
  3. Determine if a grinding noise was heard during the Diagnostics.
    • There is a grinding noise: Contact Dell Technical Support.
    • There is no grinding noise:
      1. Reinstall also the Print Head Device (PHD). To do so, see (Figure 1).
      2. Run once again the Sub Motor Diagnostics, now with both parts installed (PHD, Fuser). Determine if a grinding noise was heard.
