SmartByte Application may Slow Network Performance and Audio Issues with Inspiron Systems



Computers running the SmartByte application may encounter slow network performance or audio issues. To determine whether the issue is caused by SmartByte, and to correct the issue, the following debugging steps are recommended.

The SmartByte application is supported on most Inspiron, G3, G5 and G7 computers running Windows 10.

Note: Bookmark this article as rebooting the computer may be needed.

  1. Update the system BIOS and then test network or audio performance. For more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Dell BIOS Updates.
  2. Make sure you are at Windows 10 version 14393.0 or higher.
    To determine what version of Windows you are on, perform the following steps:
    1. Press and hold the Windows (Windows Button) key, and then press the q key.
    2. In the Search box, type winver.
    3. Touch or click winver (Run command).
    4. Locate the OS Build number in parentheses.
      Note: When the OS Build is lower than 14393.0, you can get the latest update for Windows 10 from the Microsoft website. External Link

  3. Update the computer Drivers and then test network or audio performance. For more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article How to Download and Install a Driver, which will show you how to download and install the Dell SupportAssist application, which provides automated detection, download and installation of out of date drivers.
  4. Reboot the computer, when installing any driver(s) did not force you to reboot the computer.
  5. Run the Dell SupportAssist Optimize Network application and then test network performance.
    To run the SupportAssist Optimize Network application, perform the following steps:
    1. Press and hold the Windows (Windows Button) key, and then press the q key.
    2. In the search box type, supportassist.
    3. Touch or click SupportAssist (Desktop app).
    4. Touch or click Optimize My System.
    5. Touch or click Optimize Network.
    6. Touch or click Run Now.
    7. After the Optimize Network is finished (the status bar will read 100%) touch or click the History tab.
    8. Touch or click the latest listing of Optimize Network (Manual) to review the results.

  6. Uninstall Kaspersky Security Software (when installed) and then test network or audio performance. For more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article How Do I Remove or Uninstall a Program in Windows?.
  7. Check the SmartByte Download and Upload Speeds and version number.
    To Check the Download and Upload Speeds and version number, perform the following steps:
    1. Press and hold the Windows (Windows Button) key, and then press the q key.
    2. In the Search box, type smartbyte.
    3. Touch or click SmartByte (Trusted Microsoft Store app).
    4. While in the SmartByte application, press the F4 key (on a notebook you may also need to press and hold the FN key before pressing F4).
    5. Make sure Dynamic Bandwidth service is turned on, unless you are sure of the Download and Upload Speed you want.
    6. Make sure the Version number is 1.2.600.0 or higher.
      Note: When the version number is lower than 1.2.600.0, you will need to download and install the latest version for your computer. For more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article How to Download and Install a Driver, the SmartByte Application is located in the Application category.

  8. When the following steps do not resolve the issue, disable SmartByte and then test network or audio performance.
    To Disable SmartByte perform the following steps:
    1. Press and hold the Windows (Windows Button) key, and then press the q key.
    2. In the Search box, type smartbyte.
    3. Touch or click SmartByte (Trusted Microsoft Store app).
    4. Touch or click the slider to the right of SmartByte to turn the SmartByte application off or on.
