Welcome to Dell Technologies Avamar Oracle Plugin 19.x – How to Series. How to create an Oracle Dataset to back up Oracle databases. Reference Dell Knowledge Base Article # 204555. This video was created to demonstrate how to create an Oracle Dataset in Avamar for Oracle Standalone and Oracle Real Application Cluster Databases. This video assumes that the Oracle plugin is already installed, and the initial configuration steps have been performed.
General steps that will be accomplished: 1. Log in as root to the Oracle boxes. And 4. Create a Dataset for the Databases found. This procedure should be performed when there is a need to back up an Oracle Database in Avamar. Before you begin: Have "IP" and "root" credentials for the Oracle boxes, and have "IP" and credentials for the "Avamar" user interface. Log in to the Oracle box. Determine the Oracle instances currently running on this box. Make sure all Oracle instances are present in "oratab". Discuss with the DBA, adding the instances to "oratab" if one or more are missing. Log in to the "Avamar Administrator" user interface. Click on "Tools". Click on "Manage Datasets". Click on "New".
Type a name for the dataset. Click on "Enter Explicitly". Select the correct "Plug-in Type". Select all default plug-ins and remove them by pressing the "minus" sign. Click on the three dots. Look for the Oracle box under the domain where it was registered, and select it. Click on the "Oracle RMAN" plug-in. Select the instances and click "OK". Click on "Options" and review the desired options, for example "Data Domain", and click "OK" when done reviewing them. Select the dataset created, and edit it. Click on "Options". Set the desired options like "Number of RMAN Channels", type of backup, etc., and click "OK" when done.
The dataset has now been successfully created, and can be used in a policy to back up the Oracle databases. Log in to one of the nodes in the Oracle cluster. Run "srvctl" to check which databases are running on this cluster. Check the "oratab" file and make sure the databases found are listed there. Repeat this procedure for all the computers that are a member of this cluster. Log in to the "Avamar" user interface. Click on "Tools". Click on "Manage Datasets". Click on "New". Enter a name for the dataset. Click "Enter Explicitly". Select the correct "Plug-in Type".
Select all default plug-ins from the dataset, and remove them by clicking the "minus" sign. Click on the three dots. Look for the "Oracle Scan" client and click on it. Do not click the physical hostnames. The "Oracle Scan" client is what is used at this step. Click on the "Oracle RMAN" plug-in. Select only the Oracle databases, and skip any Oracle instances. Click "OK". Click on "Options" and select all the needed "Options", like "Data Domain", and click "OK" when done.
Select the newly created dataset, and edit it. Click on "Options". Select the needed options like "Number of RMAN Channels", Back up type, etc. Click "OK" when finished. The dataset has now been created, and can be used in a policy to back up the cluster's databases. It should be possible to create Oracle Datasets after watching these videos.
