Replacing the keyboard in a Dell notebook is a relatively simple procedure. It should take about 20 minutes to complete. Before you begin: We recommend you take a few minutes to prepare.
First, review the video, "Learn How to Avoid ESD Damage" for simple precautions to avoid static damage to your components. Second, save and review your product manual on dell.com/manuals. While this video provides a general overview, some systems may have slight differences.
If you encounter any issues, refer to your manual. Locate a Phillips head or cross-slotted screwdriver. A plastic scribe or another non-marring tool may be useful as well. To begin, remove any external cables, including the AC adapter.
Remove the battery. Open the display as far as possible. Using a plastic scribe, remove the keyboard trim, releasing the top edge. Pry along the sides.
Then, release the tabs at the bottom edge and remove the trim. Remove the keyboard security screws at the bottom of the computer. Flip the keyboard over and place it on the palm rest.
Remove the tape securing the keyboard cable from the keyboard. Lift the connector latch, and disconnect the keyboard cable. Remove the keyboard and set it aside. Place the new keyboard on the palm rest and reconnect the keyboard cable.
Press down on the connector latch to secure it. Now, turn the keyboard over and place it back into position. Replace and tighten the screws on the base of the keyboard. Replace the keyboard trim.
Press firmly, starting at the bottom. Finally, replace the battery and reconnect any external cables. You have now replaced your keyboard. Please view our video, "How to Return Service Parts to Dell", for assistance in returning your replacement parts.
