Removing a heat sink:
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
CAUTION: Never remove the heat sink from a processor unless you intend to remove the processor. The heat sink is necessary to maintain proper thermal conditions.
NOTE: To ensure proper system cooling, you must install a processor blank and heat sink blank in any empty processor socket.
Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions section.
Follow the procedure listed in the Before working inside your system:
Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals.
If installed, remove the front bezel.
If applicable, remove the system from the rack.
Remove the system cover.
Keep the Phillips #2 screwdriver ready.
Remove the following:
Cooling fans
Memory risers
Memory riser and fan cage
Cable management tray
Fan tray
Removing a heat sink:
Loosen one of the screws that secure the heat sink to the system board.
Allow some time (approximately 30 seconds) for the heat sink to loosen from the processor.
Remove the screw diagonally opposite the screw you first removed.
Repeat the procedure for the remaining two screws.
Removing a processor:
Release the open first socket lever near the unlock icon unlock icon by pushing the lever down and out from under the tab.
Release the close first socket release lever near the lock icon lock icon by pushing the lever down and out from under the tab. Lift the lever 90 degrees upward.
Lower the open first socket-release lever to lift the processor shield.
Hold the tab on the processor shield and lift the processor shield until the open first socket-release lever lifts up.
CAUTION: The socket pins are fragile and can be permanently damaged. Be careful not to bend the pins in the socket when removing the processor out of the socket.
Lift the processor out of the socket and leave the open first socket-release lever up.
NOTE: If you are permanently removing the processor, you must install a socket protective cap in the vacant socket to protect the socket pins and keep the socket free of dust.
NOTE: After removing the processor, place it in an anti-static container for reuse, return, or temporary storage. Do not touch the bottom of the processor. Touch only the side edges of the processor.
Installing a processor:
Unpack the new processor.
NOTE: If the processor has previously been used in a system, remove any remaining thermal grease from the processor by using a lint-free cloth.
Locate the processor socket.
If applicable, remove the socket protective cap.
Release the open first socket-release lever near the unlock icon by pushing the lever down and out from under the tab.
Similarly, release the close first socket-release lever near the lock icon by pushing the lever down and out from under the tab. Lift the lever 90 degrees upward.
Hold the tab near the lock symbol on the processor shield and lift it up and out of the way.
CAUTION: Positioning the processor incorrectly can permanently damage the system board or the processor. Be careful not to bend the pins in the socket.
CAUTION: While removing or reinstalling the processor, wipe your hands of any contaminants. Contaminants on the processor pins such as thermal grease or oil can damage the processor.
Align the processor with the socket keys.
CAUTION: Do not use force to seat the processor. When the processor is positioned correctly, it engages easily into the socket.
Align the pin-1 indicator of the processor with the triangle on the system board.
Place the processor on the socket such that the slots on the processor align with the socket keys.
Close the processor shield.
Lower the close first socket-release lever near the lock icon lock icon and push it under the tab to lock it.
Similarly, lower the open first socket-release lever near the unlock icon unlock icon and push it under the tab to lock it.
Installing a heat sink:
If you are using an existing heat sink, remove the thermal grease from the heat sink by using a clean lint-free cloth.
Use the thermal grease syringe included with your processor kit to apply the grease in a thin spiral on the top of the processor.
CAUTION: Applying too much thermal grease can result in excess grease coming in contact with and contaminating the processor socket.
NOTE: The thermal grease syringe is intended for one-time use only. Dispose of the syringe after you use it.
Place the heat sink onto the processor.
Tighten one of the four screws to secure the heat sink to the system board.
Repeat the procedure for the remaining two screws.
Install the following:
a. Fan tray
b. Cable management tray
c. Memory riser and fan cage
d. Memory riser
e. Cooling fans
Install the cooling shroud.
Follow the procedure listed in the After working inside your system section:
Install the system cover.
If applicable, install the system into the rack.
If removed, install the front bezel.
Reconnect the peripherals and connect the system to the electrical outlet.
Turn on the system, including any attached peripherals.
While booting, press F2 to enter System Setup and verify that the processor information matches the new system configuration.
Run the system diagnostics to verify that the new processor operates correctly.
