Replacing the optical drive in a Dell laptop is a relatively simple procedure. It should take about 20 minutes to complete. Before you begin we recommend you take a few minutes to prepare.
First, review the video "Learn How to Avoid ESD Damage" for simple precautions to avoid static damage to your components. Second, save and review your product manual on dell.com/manuals. This video provides a general overview, but some systems may have slight differences.
If you encounter any issues, refer to your manual. Depending on your system model, you may require a phillips head screwdriver. Power down your system, remove all external connections, and remove the battery. Remove the screws securing the access panel to the base of the system.
Lift up the access panel at an angle, and remove it from the system. Remove the screws securing the optical drive. Insert a screw driver in to the slot and carefully nudge the drive out. Insert the new optical drive in to the optical drive bay. Replace the screw and tighten it gently to secure the drive in position.
Replace the access panel back on the system, from the sides. Insert the screws which secure the access panel in place. Insert the batter back in to the system. Start your computer. Your new drive should be automatically identified. Congratulations on successfully replacing your optical drive.
