If you take a look around you, you'll see just about everyone these days finds a way to stay connected. It's become more or less the security blanket of the 21st century. On laptops, on cell phones and on PDAs or hand-held devices, going wireless is no fad or fashion statement. It's a trend for the productive and the trend is here to stay. If you upgraded your cell phone to a hand-held device or are considering to do so you make sure you want to understand how to use the device and what it can do.
The first thing you need to do with your PDA is make sure that your wireless is turned on. If you are within range of a network, it may well pick up that network and show you that one is available. There is an icon at the top of the screen and another at the bottom. The one at the bottom shows the signal strength while the one at the top allows you to access certain functions. By clicking on that, you should be able to get a settings link that you can click on there or you can go to start and settings and then to connections where you will see the various connection items there.
Many times PDAs have a separate wireless client which is used by the PDA and by clicking on that you're going to get various features that you can use in setting up your wireless network. The biggest one is that you need to get to the configure wireless network screen but will show you available wireless networks. In some areas, major cities, downtown areas, things like that, you may in fact end up where there are several wireless networks available to you.
If you've gone to a wireless hot spot, it should appear here on that screen when you do. And basically what you're going to do is double click on it to connect. Now, at that point there may be additional connection features. That would depend on the wireless network that you're connecting to. It's basically very much the same as setting up any wireless network on another system.
There are a couple of settings that are a little unusual, because you have to tell it whether or not you're connecting to a work network or directly to the Internet. Most hot spots you will be connecting directly to the Internet. And so you have to find the connects to setting and it will have a choice for work or the Internet. And you'll need to set it to the Internet if you are connecting at a hot spot.
If you are going through your work network with wireless, you will need to choose work in most cases, and there may be additional steps to set up using a VPN, which many businesses use, and you will need to set up the settings to log in there. When you get to this configure wireless networks page, there are two tabs. One is for wireless, which should show you the available wireless networks.
The other is a network adapter's tab which should show you the available hardware that you have on your system. In most cases you won't need to use the network adapters tab. You can also set it to access only access points and also to do only computer-to-computer if you have a notebook system with a wireless card, you can connect directly to that one system.
