Hi, everybody, it's Mari with Dell Technologies.
Thank you for taking some time out of your day as we look at utilizing the Dell Command Integration Suite to automatically import new Windows PE drivers into SCCM.
As we're all aware, there are a lot of changes happening in client computing. Dell is leading the charge by introducing new models and form factors, while also enhancing existing ones with technologies like Intel Optane memory.
When new hardware and devices are introduced into your environment, you might encounter issues during imaging, such as errors indicating no network access or missing hard drives. These issues are often caused by missing drivers in your Windows PE image.
Dell has packaged the necessary drivers into Windows PE driver packages. With the Dell Command Integration Suite, we can automate the process of finding, downloading, and injecting the appropriate drivers into our boot images.
Let's go ahead and launch SCCM.
Launching SCCM
Once SCCM is loaded, navigate to Software Library > Operating Systems > Boot Images. Here, we have two boot images for Windows 10: one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit.
Since the Dell Command Integration Suite has been installed, we now have an additional button called Dell Command PE Driver Library Import. Let's select this option.
Downloading and Importing Drivers
The first step will ask if you have a proxy to use; we do not, so we proceed by selecting Next. The tool will then go out to Dell.com and download metadata about the available Windows PE driver packages.
Once the metadata is downloaded, you will see the available options. We have four packages: two for Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit) and two for Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit). Select the Windows 10 drivers and click Next.
Next, we choose which boot images we want to update, as well as the distribution points where the new boot images will be stored. Once you confirm everything, select Finish.
Driver Injection Process
After clicking Finish, the tool will begin downloading the drivers from Dell.com. It will then create a new boot image, injecting the drivers automatically. This process will take a few minutes.
Task Sequences
Once the process is complete, go back to the Boot Images section in SCCM and refresh. You'll now see the newly created boot images with the appropriate drivers.
If necessary, go into your Windows 10 task sequence, select Properties, and under Advanced, update the boot image to the new 64-bit Windows 10 boot image with the injected drivers.
Conclusion
With the Dell Command Integration Suite and Windows PE drivers, we've successfully simplified the process of supporting new models and technologies in SCCM. The tools provided make it easier to keep your infrastructure up to date without manually searching for drivers.
