Symptoms
- Issue was observed on switches running on 8.3(1).
- The following events were streaming for absent fans:
%PLATFORM-1-PFM_ALERT: FAN_BAD: fan2 fan4
- The output of
#show environmentdepicts that the concerned fans are absent and not faulty.

Cause
Cisco issue: CSCvm02193 (Log in to Cisco site is required)
Resolution
There is no workaround as this is a cosmetic error but it is a frequent issue.
Verify if the fans are physically present or absent. If fans are absent, then upgrade the switch to 8.3(2) which has a fix for this issue.
