Data Domain: Repeated file system panic after upgrade to DDOS 7.10 or later

Summary: File systems created before DDOS 7.5.x may panic after upgrading to DDOS 7.10.x or later if mtree replication is configured. The panic message is "ddr/dm/dmbt_iface.c: dmbt_get_entry_inode: 19746: !(ret == DD_ERR_NONE)." ...

Symptoms

The file system of the replication source panics repeatedly. Eventually the file system is unable to restart.

Log messages include:
PANIC: ddr/dm/dm_mrepl.c: _dm_mrepl_filter_delta_buffer: 5096: No entry matching cookie

PANIC: ddr/dm/dmbt_iface.c: dmbt_get_entry_inode: 19746: !(ret == DD_ERR_NONE)

Cause

The internal version of the Utree is changed after an upgrade to DDOS 7.10+. Mtree replication uses a cookie to resume ongoing replication jobs if the file system is interrupted, and the cookie may still be using the old Utree version. This causes the repeated panics, until mtree replication is reinitialized to remove the old cookie.

Resolution

This problem happens only on systems using mtree replication and being upgraded from DDOS 7.5 or earlier to DDOS 7.10 or later. It can occur whether the upgrade is done in one stage or multiple intermediate upgrades.

The resolution for this problem once it occurs is to break and resync all mtree replication contexts on the source Data Domain. Once the resolution is applied, the problem will not repeat.

Upgrade to any of these releases to prevent the issue from occurring:
  • DDOS 7.10.1.10 or later
  • DDOS 7.11.0.041 or later
  • DDOS 7.13.0.0 or later

NOTE: DDOS 7.12 does not have this code fix. If upgrading to DDOS 7.12 from an earlier release matching the environmental conditions shown above, the system may still encounter the code defect and panic. If planning to upgrade to DDOS 7.12, first upgrade to one of the earlier fixed DDOS releases listed above, then to the DDOS 7.12 release of your choosing.

If the issue has already occurred, break and resync each mtree replication context using the instructions in this article.
