PowerFlex: Convert a PowerFlex System with Replication to a Non-replication System

Summary: Users running a PowerFlex 3.5.x and later only system that is configured with replication would like to convert the system back to non-replication.

Instructions

As there is no documented procedure and plenty of steps that may be missed or forgotten (configuration leftovers), these steps are to ensure that the conversion is done correctly and is successful.

This process converts an async replication enabled PowerFlex system back to a non-replication enabled PowerFlex system using a manual procedure.

Note: This procedure must be performed on each node within the protection domain.

If using PFxM:

Remove Service from PowerFlex Manager.

  1. Log in to PowerFlex Manager
  2. Follow PowerFlex Manager documentation for removing an existing service.
  3. Continue to the next step.

If NOT using PFxM:

Freeze the Remote Consistency Group (RCG).

Freeze stops writing data from the target journal to the target volume.

  1. In the left pane, click Replication > RCGs.
  2. In the right pane, select the relevant RCG and click More > Freeze Apply.
  3. Click Freeze Apply.
  4. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.

Remove the RCG.

Caution: This action removes the volume pair and stops all RCG replication I/O (freeze RCG)!

Remove the RCG.

  1. In the left pane, click Replication > RCGs.
  2. In the right pane, select the relevant RCG and click More > Remove RCG.
  3. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.

Remove peer system.

  1. In the left pane, click Replication > Peer Systems.
  2. In the right pane, select the relevant Peer System and click Remove.
  3. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.

Remove replication trusted certificate for peer system.

Note: This step is optional but is required in cases of full clean up for network configurations.

  1. Connect to the Primary MDM with SSH, and log in to SCLI.
  2. Run the following command to identify trusted certificate to remove:
scli --list_trusted_ca
  1. Run the following command to remove the certificate:
scli --remove_trusted_ca --fingerprint <fingerprint>
  1. Verify that the "The Certificate was successfully removed"

Enter SDS Maintenance Mode.

Note: This step is optional but is required in cases of full clean up for network configurations.

Place an SDS into Maintenance Mode, in order to perform non-disruptive maintenance on the SDS.
  1. In the left pane, click Configuration > SDSs.
  2. In the right pane, select the relevant SDS and click More > Enter Maintenance Mode.
  3. In the Enter SDS into the Maintenance Mode dialog box, select Instant.
  4. Click Enter Maintenance Mode.
  5. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.

Remove SDR from a PowerFlex Presentation Server.

  1. In the left pane, click Replication > SDRs
  2. In the right pane, select the SDR Name and click More > Remove.
  3. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.
  4. Repeat for all SDRs.

Remove SDR RPM.

  1. SSH to Node
  2. Identify SDR RPM - EMC-ScaleIO-sdr-x.x.xxx.el7.x86_64.rpm
rpm -qa | egrep -ie emc -e sdr
  1. Remove RPM by running the following command:

rpm -e EMC-ScaleIO-sdr-x.x.xxx.el7.x86_64.rpm
  1. Verify RPM was removed, and the service stopped.

Clean Up Network Configurations.

Note: If this network is going to be used for other functions, this step is optional and is not mandatory.

  1. Remove route-bond# files associated with the Replication Network:
cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
rm route-bond(x).xxx
  1. Remove ifcfg-bond# files associated with the Replication Network:
cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
rm ifcfg-bond(x).xxx

Exit SDS Maintenance Mode

Note: This step is optional but is required in cases of full clean up for network configurations.

  1. In the left pane, click Configuration > SDSs.
  2. In the right pane, select the relevant SDS and click More > Exit Maintenance Mode.
  3. In the Enter SDS into the Maintenance Mode dialog box, select Instant.
  4. Click Exit Maintenance Mode.
  5. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.

Remove Journal Capacity.

  1. In the left pane, click Replication > Journal Capacity.
  2. In the right pane, select the Protection Domain and click Remove.
  3. In the Remove Journal Capacity dialog box, click Remove Pair.
  4. Verify that the operation was completed successfully and click Dismiss.

Remove target volumes from the destination system.

  1. Using the Destination System WebUI removes the volumes used as the target in the volume pair from the system
  2. The Destination System may now be used for other use cases.
