PowerFlex: Nutanix Cloud Platform - Client Virtual Machine Outage When PowerFlex Storage API Is Disconnected

Symptoms

 

  • Nutanix generates API Unreachable alerts.
  • Virtual machine impact occurs shortly after these alerts.

 

Example Alert:

External Storage "{external_storage_name}" API server {api_server_ip} is unreachable from node {node_uuid}. API gateway is not reachable or is down.

Cause

In NCP 7.1, a code behavior issue caused the data path service to restart due to operations timing out during volume mapping. Normally, restarting the data path service does not cause an outage. However, because the PowerFlex Manager API was unavailable after the restart, user VMs lost access to the storage path.

This timeout should not have occurred during API loss. Nutanix corrected this behavior in NCP 7.1.1.

Resolution

  • Temporary Resolution:
    Restore PowerFlex Manager to recover the API and restore VM connectivity.
  • Permanent Resolution:
    Upgrade Nutanix NCP with PowerFlex to 7.1.1 to prevent VM impact during REST API loss to the PowerFlex Manager gateway.
