17G vSAN ReadyNode: Intermittent Power-On Hang at "Host Boot in Progress"

Symptoms

Observed Symptoms

  • Systems fails to power on.
  • System hangs at "host boot in progress".
  • When Cold Redundancy (CD) is enabled, iDRAC may place a PSU in standby, leading to power‑on failure.

Cause

When Cold Redundancy (CD) is enabled with A/B Grid Redundant, iDRAC attempts to maximize PSU efficiency by putting one PSU in a standby/light‑load state while the other carries most of the load. This may cause a PSU handoff issue, a timing issue during the power‑good assertion, or a misinterpretation of PSU status. These conditions may cause a rare intermittent power‑on failure and the system to hang at "host boot in progress". 

Resolution

Prerequisites

  • Access to the iDRAC interface with appropriate credentials.

Resolution Steps

  1. Access the iDRAC interface.
  2. Go to the Power Management settings.
  3. Manually disable the Cold Redundancy (CD) option.

Power Configuration options

 

NOTE: If the system displays blinking amber LEDs after power-on, reboot the iDRAC. If the system completes POST but continues to show blinking amber LEDs due to residual cache, clear the cache and recover the system by rebooting the iDRAC.

Methods to Reboot the iDRAC

Option 1: Using the System Identification Button

  1. Locate the System Identification/iDRAC button (marked with an "i") on the server.
  2. Press and hold the button for at least 16 seconds.
  3. Release the button when:
    • The cooling fans ramp up to full speed.
    • The front LCD panel (if equipped) turns off.
  4. Wait for the iDRAC to restart.

 

NOTE: Restarting the iDRAC does not affect the server's operating system or any saved iDRAC configuration settings.

 

Option 2: Using the iDRAC Web Interface

  1. Connect to the iDRAC Web Interface.
  2. Log in using your administrator credentials.
  3. Navigate to Maintenance > Diagnostics.
  4. Select Reset iDRAC or Reboot iDRAC.
  5. Allow the iDRAC to complete the restart process.

Flea Power Drain Procedure

If the system is stuck during the boot process and fails to complete POST, perform a flea power drain:

  1. Disconnect both AC power cords.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Leave the system disconnected from power for an additional 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. Reconnect both power supplies (PSUs).
  6. Allow the iDRAC to fully initialize (approximately 1 to 2 minutes).
  7. Attempt to power on the system.

 

NOTE: After the iDRAC reboot, optionally clear the system logs.

 

Verification

  • System boots past “host boot in progress” and powers on normally.
  • Disabling Cold Redundancy (CD) keeps both PSUs active continuously, preventing the issue.

 

NOTE: VSAN Ready nodes shipped with V4 IDM already have the Cold Redundancy (CD) option disabled by default.
