NetWorker: Cluster Disaster Recovery backup failing in Passive node

Summary: Cluster Disaster Recovery backup failing in Passive node

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

File system backup fails for Disaster recovery saveset but works for local drives in a two-node cluster.

Environment:
Windows Server 2019 client with NetWorker 19.x client package installed

Cluster > Cluster_Name
Saveset details > shared drive Q: and CSV (C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1).

ClusterNode-1
Saveset details > C:\ and DR

ClusterNode-2
Saveset details > C:\ and DR

Cause

Error:

99128:save:Disaster Recovery: critical volume C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\ identified for disaster recovery backup has been created on a CSV volume. Backup of critical volume on CSV volume is not supported.

This means that some application is installed on CSV, hence it is considering CSV as critical drive.

save -o VSS:LCV=yes should not list CSV as critical volume on the physical nodes. If CSV is listed as critical, then the DR backup fails. In the below output (check Notes section), see that CSV is listed as critical on one node and from another, it is not.

Note: NetWorker supports CSV backups with the following restrictions:
  • The volume cannot be a critical volume.
  • NetWorker cannot shadow copy a CSV and local disks that are in the same volume shadow copy set.

Resolution

Remove installed application from CSV.

Additional Information

The output is from one of the nodes in the Cluster. This shows CSV as critical volume and hence backup works for C:\ and fails for DR saveset from this node.

C:\Windows\system32>save -o VSS:LCV=yes
