NetWorker: nsrimportclient: Failed to import client 'client1': Name 'client2' is not a valid host name as it cannot be resolved in DNS

Symptoms

Issue affects versions 19.10.x, previous than 19.11.0.5, previous than 19.12.0.1.

During the NetWorker Server save set which need to be cloned which was valid reported during the backup. 

server:~ # nsrimportclient -s server_name_source -d server_name_destination -v -p 0 -w '*'
204879:nsrimportclient: Failed to import client 'client_name_1': Name 'server_name_destination' is not a valid host name as it cannot be resolved in DNS.
Please add it to DNS or the hosts file and flush the NetWorker server's DNS cache (dbgcommand -p <NetWorker server pid> FlushDnsCache).
 
server_name_destination:~ # cat /etc/hosts | grep client_name_1
10.x.x.x    client_name_1.dns client_name_1

 

Cause

The error occurs when the storage node client is imported successfully before the other clients, which maintain a "migrated" state. As designed, only clients in an "Active" state are allowed for DNS lookup, leading to the observed error when subsequent clients with the same storage node host entry are processed.

To clarify, this issue does not arise if the storage node client is imported first and its state is then changed from "Migrated" to "Active."

 

Resolution

A code fix  NETWORKER-105521 is available in the following NetWorker releases:

  • 19.11.0.5
  • 19.12.0.1
  • above 19.13.x
