Symptoms

The vProxy session logs show one or more VMs failing with the following error:

2021-10-12T22:11:52Z ERROR:  [@(#) Build number: 78] 654f8808-ce2a-4472-9f50-e037ab7038b3:vm-231097:VCENTER: Failed to open source VMDK '[DATASTORE_NAME] VM-NAME/VM_NAME_#.vmdk': VDDK Error: 13: You do not have access rights to this file.

Enabling debug logging for the vProxy VDDK shows the following error in the vbackupd-vddk.log:

2021-10-12T18:11:52.409-04:00 error -[02778] [Originator@6876 sub=transport] Cannot use mode hotadd to access [DATASTORE_NAME] VM-NAME/VM_NAME_#.vmdk: Cannot mount using this method. (Mounting 421dd75d-c2a2-ff69-69d3-5b8f7cde98ca using transport hotadd failed : Failed to allocate SCSI target ID..)

Cause

Cause is unknown.  The vProxy deploys from the OVA file by default with four SCSI Controllers.  There are no configuration options available to change the number of SCSI Controllers when the vProxy is deployed.

However when reviewing the Hardware Settings for one or more of the deployed vProxies, they are showing only one SCSI controller.  The VDDK error is occurring because the vProxy does not have the expected default of four SCSI controllers, and is running out of room to mount additional client disks during the backup.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, you can do the following:
1.  Ensure that there are no vProxy backups running in NetWorker Management Console (NMC).
2.  Shut down the vProxy VM in VMware.
3.  Go to Edit Settings and add the missing SCSI controllers to the affected vProxy so there are a total of 4.
4.  Restart the vProxy.  It detects and auto configure the new controllers.

The vProxy hardware settings should look like the following when complete:
