How do I configure an SNMP community string on MDS and Nexus Switches?

Facts

Community String

Answer

The appropriate command to configure an SNMP community string for read/write access, i.e. what other systems will use to access the switch (such as VCE Vision), is snmp-server community:
Syntax:
snmp-server community name group {ro | rw}

Example:
switch(config)# snmp-server community public ro

Note that the groups ro and rw may automatically convert to network-operator and network-admin respectively.  These terms are interchangeable.

SNMP Traps are configured via the snmp-server host command, which also requires a community string value to send WITH the traps.  This command DOES NOT configure or enable an SNMP community string for read/write access.
