De juiste opdracht om een SNMP-community-tekenreeks te configureren voor lees-/schrijftoegang, d.w.z. wat andere systemen zullen gebruiken om toegang te krijgen tot de switch (zoals VCE Vision), is snmp-servercommunity: 
Syntax:
snmp-server community name group {ro | rw}

Example:
switch(config)# snmp-server community public ro 
 

Houd er rekening mee dat de groepen ro en rw automatisch kunnen converteren naar respectievelijk netwerk-operator en netwerkadministrator.  Deze termen zijn verwisselbaar.


SNMP-traps worden geconfigureerd via de hostopdracht van de snmp-server, waarvoor ook een community-tekenreekswaarde is vereist om MET de traps te verzenden.  Deze opdracht configureert of schakelt geen SNMP-community-tekenreeks in voor lees-/schrijftoegang.
