Symptoms

No issue with device discovery in SRM GUI

Datastore creation has no issues in vCenter.

Creation of protection group failing with error: "Operation Error: Cannot protect datastore '<datastore>' which spans 2 different consistency groups and standalone devices: "<devID>", "<devID>"

Cause

The datastore is configured to have multiple extents (devices) which require devices to be grouped in a device group/composite group.

The devices were not part of any Device groups/Composite (consistency) groups.

The SRDF SRA requires that all devices are in device groups or composite groups with consistency enabled before creating protection groups.

When devices are not grouped, each replicated device is presented in its own datastore group because the SRM and the SRA do not know of device dependencies and application relationships beyond that of a virtual machine spanning multiple devices.

This case can lead to incorrect configurations when creating protection groups and recovery plans as required devices may not be properly grouped.

Resolution

Post adding R1 and R2 devices to device groups, the creation of protection group was successful.
