Symptoms
- PowerProtect Data Manager protects vSphere VMs using TSDM.
- After several days, VM backups fail with ABV0040 on certain ESXi hosts.
- Backup session export and
vmdm.logshow:
SDM Delta Sync: The vCenter task for 'SDM Snapshot Sync Delta' completed with state 'error'. com.vmware.dp.fault.snapshottransportfault [] Failed to transport snapshot data
The ESXi host dpd.log shows:
Canceling sync ... due to unresponsive transport provider ppdm_sdm Error on Sync ... failed with error: (dp.fault.SnapshotTransportFault)
The ESXi tsdm.log shows:
ddcl_establish_file_buffer_pool: error creating file private pool Unable to allocate file ddcl buffers ddp_write() failed ... Err: 5001-Unable to allocate file ddcl buffers
Cause
The issue is caused by a memory leak in the DD Boost binary (DDOSCFD-26030) encountered during TSDM backups.
- PowerProtect versions 19.20 and 19.21 include DD Boost library
8.3.0-0-1148040, which is affected. - The fix was introduced in DD Boost library 8.5.0.0-1178591 and later.
Resolution
- Upgrade to PowerProtect Data Manager 19.22.0-16 or any release that includes DD Boost library 8.5.0.0 or newer.
- Version 19.22 includes DD Boost library
8.6.0.0-1200315.
- Version 19.22 includes DD Boost library
- If upgrade is not immediately possible, restart the TSDM service as a temporary workaround.
