Dell Unity: Cannot Upload OE Upgrade File to System, Error Code-0x6000cc4, Incorrect Format

Symptoms

Error Message:

File uploaded is incorrect format. Please obtain a new copy of the upgrade image and try again. (Error Code:0x6000cc4)

Cause

This error can occur when an unsupported upgrade is attempted. Some upgrades require upgrading to a specific version and then upgrading again to the final version.

The error message is shown as the encryption keys are not available to decrypt the upgrade package:

File uploaded is incorrect format. Please obtain a new copy of the upgrade image and try again. (Error Code:0x6000cc4)

Resolution

Some Unity OE upgrades cannot be done directly and require intermediate upgrade steps.

The below table describes the valid upgrade paths. Unity systems running versions earlier than 5.1 must upgrade to 5.4.1 before upgrading to version 5.5. This is due to changes in support for TLS, KMIP, and encryption keys between pre-5.1 versions and 5.5.

  To 5.4.1.x To 5.5.0.x To 5.5.1.x
From 4.x 4.x → 5.4.1.x 4.x → 5.4.1.x → 5.5.0.x 4.x → 5.4.1.x → 5.5.1.x

If following an unsupported upgrade path, remove the uploaded image, obtain the correct image, and reattempt the upgrade.
