What
Usage Intelligence is a feature which enables Avamar to automatically collect and send reporting information to Dell.  
The types of reports that are sent to Avamar Support vary depending on how the Avamar server is licensed. The report could contain the Back-End Capacity in TB (BETB) or Front-End Capacity in TB (FETB). The definition of these reports is discussed here. 
 
Why
Usage Intelligence provides the following benefits:
    • Customers gain the ability to understand how much software license is consumed with deployed systems
    • Enables Dell Technologies to track customer adoption more effectively, which can assist with forecasting, planning, and prioritization
    • Helps the sales teams to quote more accurately during the sales process
How
The report is generated by the Management Console Server (MCS) and then sent to the Common Licensing Platform (CLP) using the Secure Remote Services (SRS) Gateway.

1. The BETB and FETB reports are created by MCS.

2. A schedule(Usage Intelligence Schedule) is created in MCS to send the report.

By default, this report is sent at 10 AM PDT, but the time can be customized.

3. An SRS Gateway should be added to MCS.

The SRS Gateway can be set using the menu "Tools -> Manage ESRS". 

Before adding the SRS Gateway, the CLP license must be applied on an Avamar grid. More information about the CLP license is available here

4. MCS sends the UI report to SRS Gateway.

MCS sends the UI report to SRS Gateway depending on the difference license types.

Valid license types:
        • AVAMAR_BE_CAP - associated with Backend Capacity on Avamar Data Store
        • AVAMAR_DD_CAP - associated with Metadata Capacity on Avamar and Data Domain Integrated Systems
        • AVAMAR_REP_CAP - associated with Backend Capacity or Metadata Capacity on Avamar Replication Target Servers
        • AVAMAR_VE_Half TB - fixed at 512 (GB) if this is a 0.5 TB AVE
        • AVAMAR_VE_1TB  - fixed at 1 (TB) if this is a 1TB AVE
        • AVAMAR_VE_2TB  - fixed at 2 (TB) if this is a 2TB AVE
        • AVAMAR_VE_4TB - fixed at 4 (TB) if this is a 4TB AVE
        • AVAMAR_DPS_BU - associated with Front-End Capacity (Data Protected) on all Avamar server types
        • AVAMAR_S2400 - (1) if 3.9 TB, (2) if double capacity 7.8 TB 
 

Essentially, FETB report is used for AVAMAR_DPS_BU, and BETB report is used for all others.

5. SRS Gateway relays the UI reports to Dell Common License Platform.

6. The UI report can be viewed on CLP.

The customer must set the account up to log in on CLP.
