Instructions
On Unity OE 4.1.x release and newer, it is possible to setup local users through the GUI. You can retrieve, edit and upload the passwd and group files to setup local users.
For multiprotocol setups, it is recommended to setup NIS or LDAP for Unix accounts (KB 491184). Using the local files for multiple users creates a management overhead as both AD and Local Users require regular updates, so the following implementation is only recommended for small and very specific setups:

For multiprotocol setups, it is recommended to setup NIS or LDAP for Unix accounts (KB 491184). Using the local files for multiple users creates a management overhead as both AD and Local Users require regular updates, so the following implementation is only recommended for small and very specific setups:
Before proceeding, have the following points in consideration:
- It is advised to test CIFS access before enabling multiprotocol, to be sure this config is correct.
- To enabe local files, it is required to enable multiprotocol first
- When multiprotocol is enabled CIFS access will be interrupted, it will remain this way until every CIFS user who connects, has an associated UNIX UID to map.
- it is recommended to only enable multiprotocol during non-production hours, or in new implementations only if possible.
- Download the passwd file, we recommend to use a Unix/Linux editor to prevent formatting issues (cygwin can be used too)
- Create one entry for each CIFS user here, and set it in the passwd file, usernames must match CIFS's usernames here's an example:
user1::1001:1001:
user2::1002:1002:
user3::1003:1003:
user2::1002:1002:
user3::1003:1003:
- Make sure no empty lines are left in the passwd file, or spaces at the end of the line, also note Unix is case sensitive, upload the file and it will take immediate effect.
- You should also edit the Group file, and match the GIDs with the ones set in the passwd file.
