Symptoms

A customer is concerned about the security implications of leaving the SNMP service running on their Avamar system where SNMP is not used.

The system has been updated with the latest Security patches and there is no specific CVE that must be addressed.

Cause

A nonspecific security concern.

Resolution

Disabling the SNMP service does not adversely affect the Avamar system. Where Avamar is integrated with Data Domain, SNMP is required for monitoring purposes.

To disable SNMP:-

Log in to the Avamar Utility Node as the operating system root user.

Verify that the snmpd service is running.
Stop the service.
Disable the service so that it does not restart on reboot.
service snmpd status
service snmpd stop
Stopping the snmp service
chkconfig --list snmpd
Checking service status
This output shows that snmpd is configured to be started whenever the operating system switches to run levels 2, 3 or 5. Run level 3 is the default run level which is active when Avamar is in normal operation.
Disable snmpd for run levels 1-5.
chkconfig --level 12345 snmpd off
Check that the change took effect
chkconfig --list snmpd
kA2j0000000QXsyCAG_1_2
Here we see that the snmpd service is configured to not start in any run level.
