[Isilon] Smartfailed H4STR76 series SSDs prevent successful node reboot if not replaced

Symptoms

If a smartfailed H4STR763CLAR3840 or H4STR767CLAR7680 SSD is left in a node after smartfail completion, and that node is subsequently rebooted, the node may fail to boot showing an error message similar to the following on the console and in logs (in this example, the affected disk is da4):

GEOM_MIRROR[1]: Cannot read metadata from da4 (error=6).
GEOM_MIRROR[1]: Cannot read metadata from da4 (error=6).

GEOM start failed
To prevent a DL situation, contact Contact Technical Support immediately:

Command Options:
1) Enter recovery shell
2) Continue booting
3) Reboot

If the node does boot successfully, either initially or on a subsequent attempt, the drive state may also change from 'REPLACE' to 'USED'.

Cause

This issue is related to the way the drive firmware for these drives handles drive erasure. Updated firmware will be released in an upcoming DSP that will resolve this issue.

Resolution

To avoid hitting this issue, please replace any smartfailed drives as soon as the smartfail process completes, and avoid rebooting nodes that contain smartfailed drives awaiting replacement. If you hit the issue where the node won't boot completely, simply reboot the node again by selecting option 3 from the menu shown - this will clear the condition and boot the node back up. Once the node is fully booted, replace the smartfailed drive(s) ASAP. If you see the issue where the node boots successfully but the smartfailed drive(s) state has changed from REPLACE to USED, no additional action is required - just replace the affected drive(s) as normal.
