Unisphere for VMAX: When removing last device in Storage Group "The view cannot have an empty storage/port group, aborting"

Symptoms



Trying to remove the last device from a Storage Group, generates an error.

The device was first made "Device not ready" (to make sure no hosts would be affected).

Error msg:
 
The view cannot have an empty storage/port group, aborting

Cause

As per the Solutions Enabler Users Guide, the masking view must be removed first:

Resolution

To address this issue:
  1. Locate the masking view (MV):

  1. Note your volume(s)
  2. Delete the masking view (ensuring that no users, or hosts will be affected).
Caution!! Pick the appropriate options below:

  • Note: Deleting the storage group, removes the device(s) from the Storage Group (SG), and puts the volumes back in the list, but it does not delete the volumes themselves.
  1. If you did not select "Delete Storage Group(s)" (as shown above), or were not given a choice to delete the SG, then proceed with removing the last device in the Storage Group itself:

Warning!! "Unbind" (shown above) deletes data (if you select this option).
