Symptoms

The capacity label on drive handle assembly is different than vendor top cover capacity label. This may cause confusion and suspicion that the drive was built incorrectly.

Dell/EMC PN: 005052584 drive label capacity indicates 3.84T SSD.
Top cover vendor capacity indicates 3.2T SSD

Cause

As drive technology evolves, previous native capacities are not always available in the next generation of the drive and therefore, a higher capacity drive is used with changes to drive settings to the desired capacity configuration which matches the Dell EMC drive label on the handle. In addition, SSD drive over provisioning configurations can be adjusted to the desired drive type and capacity which may increase or decrease capacity as compared to the vendor top cover label.

These drive configuration changes are normal and part of Dell EMC s advanced manufacturing to provide efficiencies, flexibility, and meet customer demand while reducing SKU count and custom configurations normally done at the vendor. Drive vendor labels are not modified to comply with warranty requirements with the vendor.

Resolution

These drives are form/fit/function equivalent to the capacity as indicated on the handle of the assembly. It is highly recommended to ONLY refer to the capacity label on the Dell EMC drive label on the handle of the drive assembly, and NOT the label on the raw drive component. Referring to the drive support matrix will ensure the part number required for the capacity or replacement drive is the appropriate part number for that platform.
