For help with diagnosing and resolving issues with a CD, DVD or Blu-ray drive, such as when you cannot write or record or play CD, DVD, or Blu-ray discs, when the drive is not found, not accessible or not connected, eject and other mechanical issues, select the link below that most closely matches what you want help with. The instructions in the links below can be used for both internal and external drives but some of the fundamentals might be a little different. It is important to remember that the issues described below can also be caused by more than just a bad disc drive.

  • Before following any of the steps in the links below, make sure that multiple discs do not work in the drive. If only one CD, DVD, or Blu-ray disc is causing problems, it is an issue with the disc itself and not the drive.
  • You can run specific diagnostics for your optical drive, browse to the Online Optical Diagnostics page.
    • The test will start automatically.
    • You may be prompted to install or update the SupportAssist program, if so, follow the prompts.
