NVP vProxy: large number of sessions causing the vCenter's VPXD service to fail or run out of HTTP sessions.

Summary: vCenter Hypervisor account is requesting many sessions causing the vCenter's Virtual Provisioning X Daemon (VPXD) to fail or run out of HTTP sessions.

Symptoms

The vCenter server's VPXD service is failing or running out of HTTP sessions due to many requests from the NetWorker server.  The NetWorker server's daemon.raw shows many entries with the following error:

Linux: /nsr/logs/daemon.raw
Windows: <INSTALL_DRIVE>:\Program Files\EMC NetWorker\nsr\logs\daemon.raw

The vCenter Server vpxd.log shows:

Cause

The VMware View (NSR Hypervisor) user account does not have the required privileges to properly update the vSphere backup tasks. This results in sessions being created to vCenter with many retries. When you run many backups together, the session or retry count gets high which can result in denied session requests from the vCenter.

Resolution

  1. Ensure that the account used to add the vCenter to the NetWorker server has the permissions outlined in the NetWorker VMware Integration Guide. This documentation is available through: https://www.dell.com/support/home/product-support/product/networker/docs
vCenter User
NOTE: Permissions can be validated using the ProxyHC utility with the perm option: NVP-vProxy: How to use health check tool ProxyHC on vProxy appliance
  1. If the vCenter is a cloud deployment, ensure that the Deployed In Cloud option is checked:

Deployed in Cloud

  1. NetWorker 19.10 (and later) introduces functionality to reduce the amount of times nsrvim automatically inventories the vCenter from 15 minutes up to 60 minutes. This also helps reduce the VPXD load on the vCenter: NVP vProxy: NetWorker nsrvim process runs every 15 minutes causing a high workload on vCenter Server and potential VPXD unavailability

Workaround:

Disable "Console Event" and "Console Cancel" attributes for the NSR Hypervisor resource. This removes the NetWorker Backup task in the vSphere web client, thus minimizing the sessions and queries to the vCenter. The snapshot creation and reconfiguration tasks are still shown during the backup workflow.

1. Launch an Administrator or root command prompt on the NetWorker server.
2. Run: nsradmin
3. Enter: print type: nsr hypervisor; name: vcenter_server_name
NOTE: Replace vcenter_server_name with the name of your vCenter as seen in the NetWorker Management Console (NMC).
4. Enter: update console cancel: no
5. Enter: yes
6. Enter: update console events: no
7. Enter: yes
8. Enter: print
nsradmin> print
                        type: NSR hypervisor;
                        name: vcenter_server_name;
                     version: vcenter_version;
                     comment: ;
                     service: VMware VirtualCenter;
                    endpoint: "https://vcenter_server_name/sdk";
                    username: "vcenter_user_name";
                    password: *******;
                     command: nsrvim;
                       proxy: networker_server_name;
              console events: No;
              console cancel: No;

9. To exit nsradmin, enter: quit
