PowerEdge: Is TRIM supported on PERC9 controller in RAID mode
Summary: This Question and Answer article details the compatibility of PERC9 with TRIM commands.
Instructions
A TRIM command, known as TRIM in the ATA command set, and UNMAP in the SCSI command set, allows an operating system to inform a solid-state drive (SSD) which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped internally. Trimming enables the SSD to more efficiently handle garbage collection, which would otherwise slow future write operations to the involved blocks.
TRIM for SSDs is listed as a feature of the PERC family. There have been reports that TRIM is only supported in HBA mode and not in RAID mode.
As of January 2017, support for the TRIM command is not implemented in most hardware-based RAID technologies. However, software RAID implementations often do include support for TRIM. Furthermore the TRIM feature is supported only on the pass-through SSDs. To find out how to perform TRIM on pass through SSDs, please consult the S130 User's Guide.
