Symptoms

During SMS SPACE CONSTRAINT RELIEF process, the following issues may be seen.

If the error is during a SNAP job, both the following messages are seen. If during other processing, for example an IBM IDCAMS Delete Define, then only the IGC306I message is seen:-
 

ESNP230E ERROR RETURNED FROM EXTENTS PROGRAM - RC: 0008 RS: 000

IGD306I UNEXPECTED ERROR DURING IEFAB4C1 PROCESSING RETURN CODE 8 REASON CODE 12


UCB becomes unavailable. Device goes offline and cannot be varied online.

Cause

This issue is due to a problem in IBM operating system code. Please see IBM APAR OA62325

Resolution

Workaround:

  • An IPL is required to allow z/OS to rebuild the UCB.
  • A SLIP command can be used to modify the in storage UCB to prevent the need for an IPL, but this requires input from IBM.

Permanent Fix:

  • IBM resolves this issue in APAR OA62325
