Embedded Software Lifecycle

Information pertaining to our Embedded Thin Client Software Lifecycle, reference https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-us/products/thin-clients/technical-support/wyse-thin-clients-os-lifecycle-matrix.pdf. Below is an overview of the three support phases with examples on how this applies to ThinOS:

  • Before EoML - The period from Release to Order (RTO) to End of Marketing Life (EoML) is typically 3 to 4 years where active software updates are provided on a regular (typically quarterly) basis. Thin Clients in production are typically entitled to all operating system and partner feature updates free of charge. These updates are posted to the Dell E-Support site on a per platform basis.
  • EoML to EoFS - The period from EoML to End of Feature Support (EoFS) is typically 2.5 years. During this period partner features and operating system updates are evaluated and implemented on a regular (quarterly) basis if there is sufficient client resources and remaining Lifecycle period to support the new updates before the end of this EoFS phase.
  • EoFS to EoSS - The period from EoFS to End of Service/Support (EoSS) is typically 2.5 years. During this period, regular (quarterly) maintenance is terminated and customers are only entitled to private builds to address critical defects and critical volatilities. Dell uses the following criteria to make its determination:
    • Critical Defect - A failure that makes the client unusable more than one per day that requires a client restart to recover
    • Critical Vulnerability - Any vulnerability with a CVE score greater than 8
  • Past EoSS - No software updates are provided.

Additional Information:

  • ThinOS updates to address issues are always applied to the latest qualified release for the platforms. Customers who want fixes or new features must update to receive these updates. Resolutions in older releases are not offered.
  • There is an exception for that allows 3040, 5070, 5470, 5470 AIO customers to receive EoFS to EoSS support for ThinOS 8.6. This support terminates in January 2024.
  • Software Lifecycle is set at Project OLP Plan Phase Exit and cannot be extended by hardware warranty (this ensures restoration of last factory release to the client) or Pro Support (this provides a support entitlement but does not guarantee software updates).

Supported Peripherals

There are three levels of support ThinOS provides for devices. Any device that meets one of the three cases below should be considered supported and a defect that is raised to address any issue.

  • Eco System devices - These are devices that Dell qualifies and sales.
  • Tested/Supported devices - These are devices that Dell qualifies by ThinOS Software Quality Assurance and listed in the ThinOS Release Notes.
  • Industry Standard Interfaces - Any device that does not require local client drivers beyond those supplied by ThinOS to function. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Display Port monitors, Serial devices on clients with an onboard DB9 Serial connector, 3.5 mm Audio devices (speakers and headsets).
    • USB HID, USB Serial, USB AUDIO, and USB Mass Storage (with supported file system types) devices that function with the generic ThinOS HID, Serial, Audio, and Mass Storage drivers. This would include devices such as a barcode scanner, USB printers, Topaz signature pads, Poly headsets, Powemic, or SpeechMike devices, and so on.
    • Any USB device that can be redirected and placed under host driver control. This would include imaging scanners, encrypted, or NTFS formatted USB flash drives, and so on.
    • Any network printer that supports LPD/LPR or SMB formats.
