PowerEdge: Import Drive firmware into Nautilus utility

Summary: This article describes how to inject HARD DRIVE/SSD firmware into the Nautilus firmware that is not already packaged within.

Instructions

Step 1: Extract the Nautilus and Drive firmware file.

First observe in this example the drives that we are testing with are at EJ39 firmware.

Extract Nautilus and Drive firmware file

Download the Nautilus utility. Double-click to open Nautilus. It extracts to a folder. In this example, we extracted to C:\Dell\Nautilus.

Double-click the Drive firmware DUP, and it has an extract option. We extracted to a folder called "driver" on the Downloads folder.

Step 2: Copy Drive Firmware File to Nautilus.

If you examine in the Nautilus directories where it was extracted, you see a FILES folder. There you see a fw folder for firmware. Within this folder are other subfolders. Navigating through them you see subfolders for each class of drive (SAS vs SATA), hard drive vendors, and individual drive models and firmware files for each.

In this example we deleted the entire "disk" folder with all the firmware files. We are not reliant on the folder structure. It also makes the end ISO file smaller. You do not need to do this.

Navigate to the folder where you have extracted the drive firmware. There is a payload folder with a .fwh file. Copy that over to the "fw" folder in the Nautilus directory.

Copy this firmware file over to the "fw" directory where we extracted Nautilus.

Step 3: Create a Bootable USB drive or ISO.

Open UsbMake.exe

Nautilus directory

You can create a bootable USB drive or create a bootable ISO file. In this example, we are creating a bootable ISO to the Downloads folder.

Step 4: Boot and run utility.

Boot to the USB drive or ISO. In this example, the ISO was mounted using the iDRAC Virtual Console and booted using Virtual Optical Drive option.

The Utility boots and give initial information about the drives. In this example, you can see that the current firmware reported as EJ39.

Clicking a single drive updates that drive. You get a firmware updated successfully message reflecting the new firmware.

Clicking the Play Button updates all drives at once.

Step 5: Verify firmware update.

The Nautilus utility reports the new firmware. The iDRAC may not update without restarting the node, the iDRAC, or both.
You can check storage, and if it does not reflect the latest change, reboot the node to collect inventory again.
Soft restarting the iDRAC may also be required.
