PowerEdge: Enabling serial-line logging for VMware ESXi host
Summary: This article provides information about how to enable serial-line logging for a VMware ESXi host.
Instructions
- Use the Serial cable to connect to server`s serial port.
2. Connect the other side of the serial cable to your personal computer. If your personal computer does not have a serial port, you can use the serial-usb cable.
3. Open the serial connect tools like PuTTY and verify the COM# of your personal computer.
Note that you can open Windows Device Manager to verify your COM port number.
Note that if you use the usb-serial cable and you do not see any COM device, you can try to install the use-serial cable driver first. The most popular usb-serial windows driver is the Prolific PL2303 driver.
4. Change the logging option to make the serial connect tool write the output data to the local disk. Enter the COM# to the Serial line, change the speed to 115200, and click Open.
After setting successful, you should see ESXi showing vmkernel logs to your personal computer.
