Symptoms

RecoverPoint for VMs 6.0 and later uses VMware vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering(VAIO) filter to protect VMs. This filter also updates the storage policy of the disk on the VM.

If the VM is based on a snap or snapshot tree, or has snaps, it fails with this message.

A specified parameter was not correct: spec.deviceChange.device The IO filter cannot be changed when snapshot disks are present. Storage policy change failure: One of the parameters supplied is invalid.

 

Cause

This limitation is the VAIO I/O Filter mechanism that the 6.0 and later RecoverPoint for VMs splitter uses.

From VMware documentation:
"If your virtual machine has a snapshot tree associated with it, you cannot add, change, or remove the I/O filter policy for the virtual machine."

This limitation is a vSphere limitation, RecoverPoint for VMs cannot work around it.
