Instructions
Note: This article applies to Windows Server 2022 Essentials and later versions. Earlier versions of Windows Server Essentials differed substantially from the corresponding Standard edition.
The Essentials edition of the Windows Server operating system (OS) is only available for purchase from OEMs such as Dell. It is functionally identical to the Standard edition; only the licensing of the two editions is different, as detailed below. There is no specific installation media for the Essentials edition. Instead, an Essentials edition product key is used to activate the Standard edition. For this reason, the OS edition appears to be Standard during installation.
Here are the limitations of the Windows Server Essentials license:
- The OS may only be installed on a server with a single CPU and up to 10 processor cores.
- No client access licenses (CALs) are required.
- A maximum of 25 unique users and 50 unique devices may access and use the Essentials server.
- Windows Server Essentials offers limited virtualization rights. You may run, at any time:
- One instance of the server software in one physical operating system environment (OSE); and
- One instance of the server software in one virtual OSE on the licensed server
- If you run both permitted instances simultaneously, the instance of the server software running in the physical OSE may be used only to run hardware virtualization software or provide hardware virtualization services.
