Windows Server: How to Install the Network File System (NFS) Role in Windows and Create an NFS Share

Instructions

Install the NFS Role Service:

  1. From the Manage menu of Server Manager, select Add Roles and Features.
  2. Click Next on the Welcome screen.
  3. On the Installation Type screen, select Role-based or feature-based installation and click Next.
  4. Ensure that the correct target server is selected and click Next.
  5. Expand File and Storage Services, then expand File and iSCSI Services.
  6. Select Server for NFS.
  7. Click Add Features in the display window that appears, then click Next to proceed.
  8. Click Next again on the Features screen.
  9. Click Install on the Confirmation screen to begin the installation.
  10. You may click Close during installation or after it finishes.

Create an NFS Share:

  1. Launch File Explorer and browse to the folder you want to share.
  2. Right-click the folder and select Properties.
  3. In the NFS Sharing tab of the properties window, click Manage NFS Sharing.
  4. Select the box labeled Share this folder.
  5. Specify a name for the share or use the name provided.
  6. Select other options as needed.
  7. Click Permissions to set the required permissions on the share.
  8. Click OK, then click Close to close the properties window. The folder's icon now shows that it has been shared.
