PowerProtect Data Manager: Virtual Machine Shuts Down During TSDM Snapshot Creation

Summary: In rare circumstances, an ESXi can encounter memory exhaustion which prevents the Lightweight Delta (LWD) filter for a Transparent Snapshot Data Mover (TSDM) protected virtual machine (VM) from loading. In such cases, the vCenter High Availability (HA) shuts down the VM during the TSDM snapshot process. ...

Symptoms

  • The VM is or was previously protected with a solution that uses the LWD filter (Dell PowerProtect Data Manager, VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery).
  • The VM guest operating system (OS) will power off during the TSDM snapshot creation.
  • In the VM's vmware.log (on the ESXi host where the VM is located), similar entries are seen:

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS In(05) vcpu-0 - LWD: Initializing the LWD filter (process: 516492883)
YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS In(05) vcpu-0 - FiltLib: VMKPrivate_FiltModInitDiskInfo failed: "Out of memory (ok to retry)" (195887125).
YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS In(05) vcpu-0 - FiltLib: FiltLibAttachToFiltMod failed with error: "Operation failed" (1).

Cause

This symptom occurs when there is no overhead memory available on the ESXi host to load the LWD filter for the VM snapshot creation.

Resolution

This is a rare vSphere issue, which has only been observed in isolated circumstances. Broadcom has added enhancements to remediate scenarios in the newer ESXi host releases. It is recommended to update the environment to the newest available vSphere release to take advantage of the enhancements. If required, contact Broadcom Support and reference Brocade KB 344905(External Link).
