If a customer follows the instruction of the "Resolution" mentioned in the above VMware KB article, to disable the VMDQ loopback feature using the Intel esxi-plugin tool ("intnetcli"), an error "Device vmnicX is not supported" would be seen after issuing the suggested command:
The same failure exists on the Intel E810 card running on 22.5.7 firmware and icen 1.12.5.0 driver, or an earlier Firmware Driver combination under VMware ESXi 7.0.3 or 8.x.
Cause
Intel E810 adapter on 1.12.5.0 or earlier icen driver does not support disabling the VMDQ loopback feature.
Resolution
Fix:
Intel has provided the fix for disabling the VMDQ loopback feature in the icen driver 1.14.2.0 for both ESXi 7.x and 8.x.
Upgrade to this new driver with the corresponding firmware release plus install the Intel esxi-plugin tool ("intnetcli") 1.13.0.25.
