Symptoms

A VxRail cluster upgrade from 5.0.x to 5.1.x/5.2.x or from 5.1.x to 5.2.x fails with an error message:

"Skipping VxRail cluster upgrade required patch binary: VPTWN _VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip is not available. The file /nfs/vmware/vcf/nfs-mount/bundle/VPTWN _VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip does not exist."

From the UI, the error message below is displayed:

VPTWN _VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip does not exist

Check the bundle directory if the bundle does exist and is downloaded. Check the bundle names, the downloaded bundle is xxxx-for-7.0.x instead of xxxx-for-8.0.x.

Cause

The VxRail 8.0.100 to 8.0.2xx or 8.0.3xx upgrade requires an upgrade bundle that is not supported by VCF 5.1.x/VCF 5.2.x.

Resolution

There is no resolution to this issue.

The script and manual steps below are a workaround.

Follow the steps in the Broadcom article: 323978This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.
This includes:

  1. Manually downloading the required bundle which is for 8.0.x from the Dell website
  2. Manually create a checksum file
  3. Run the provided script to copy and rename the packages manually downloaded. Copy the checksum files, and then move them to the correct paths and grant the correct permissions.

The following is a guide on how to manually create a checksum file:

  • To create a checksum file, use the following KB VxRail: How to check checksum on downloaded upgrade package in Windows if using windows.
1). Obtain the checksum value using below command:

    # sha256sum VPTWN_VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip

    537152b2c046e88b6a0e1b7bb18ae2cac4a3642c210e22e5b0aa447c7878015d VPTWN_VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip

2). Create a file and add this checksum value to this file using vi command under /home/vcf:

    # vi VPTWN_VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip.checksum

3). Verify this value and then proceed with the upgrade.

    # cat VPTWN_VxRail-8.0.300-Composite-Upgrade-Slim-Package-for-8.0.x.zip.checksum 537152b2c046e88b6a0e1b7bb18ae2cac4a3642c210e22e5b0aa447c7878015d

Note: This has been fixed since VxRail 8.0.320
