Data Domain Cloning to Cloud Tier Device Fails with Error: 5008 - Invalid Flags and Mode Combination

Summary: This article explains a Data Domain issue affecting DDOS versions 7.11+, 8.0+, and later. The problem was first observed with NetWorker versions 19.10.0.2-5, or 19.11.0.0-2

Symptoms

  • Affects systems running DDOS 7.11+, 8.0+
  • First seen in NetWorker versions 19.10.0.2 and 19.11+
  • Clone operations to Cloud Tier fail
  • Error message observed:
Err: 5008-flags and mode combination invalid

Cause

This issue is caused by a new feature introduced in DDOS versions 7.11+, 8.0+, and later, designed to improve basefile tracking for certain products and workflows. However, this enhancement is not fully compatible with NetWorker versions 19.10.0.2, 19.11, and above. When these NetWorker versions interact with the updated DDOS, the incompatibility results in clone failures to Cloud Tier devices.

The root of the problem lies in the DDOS feature that allows applications to substitute filecopy in place of fastcopy. This behavior introduces two main issues:

Scope Limitation:
Filecopy is intended only for local copies between different MTrees. Cloud Tier cloning; however, involves operations within the same MTree, making this substitution inappropriate.

Usage Constraints:
Filecopy in this context is designed to handle individual files. While most NetWorker savesets fit this model, vProxy savesets are structured as folders, which are not supported by this mechanism.

As a result, this incompatibility leads to the observed clone failures and error messages.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in upcoming NetWorker releases. It is recommended to upgrade to the latest NetWorker version.

Workaround:
To avoid the issue in the meantime, use an unaffected NetWorker version as the Storage Node handling writes to the Cloud Tier device. The following versions are confirmed to be unaffected:

NetWorker 19.9.0.7 - Recommended, as it includes the latest updates.

NetWorker 19.10.0.1 - Also unaffected, but lacks many current updates.

Latest networker version with fix: fixed in NetWorker versions 19.10.0.5/19.11.0.3/19.2.x only appears from NetWorker version 19.10.0.2+/19.11+

Additional Information

This issue may affect other NetWorker workflows as well. Notice that:

  • Clone jobs to destination device using same MTree as source device
  • Operations related to vProxy savesets
  • Operations related to devices using Retention Lock

Note: Although the compatibility guide on ELABNavigator indicates that these DDOS and NetWorker versions are compatible, this is not a compatibility issue. The problem is caused by a solution-specific issue.
