You have already worked through the basic audio troubleshooting steps on the No Sound on Computer: Troubleshoot Audio Issues page and your sound still is not working. This article picks up from there with additional troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the issue.

Follow these steps in order
Work through each step one at a time. If a step resolves the issue, you do not need to continue. If it does not, move on to the next one.
Step 1: Restart your computer
Before trying other steps, restart your computer if you have not already done so since the issue began. A restart clears temporary processes and memory states that can sometimes interfere with audio.
Tip: Save any open documents or files before you restart.
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- Once your computer restarts, test your audio again.
If the issue persists after restarting, continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Perform a hard reset (power cycle)
A hard reset drains residual power and resets hardware components.
- Turn off the computer.
- Disconnect the power cable and all external devices (including the mouse and keyboard on a desktop).
- Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable (reconnect the mouse and keyboard on a desktop) and turn on the computer.
- Test the audio.
If the issue persists, continue to Step 3.
Step 3: Inspect the audio port and connector for damage or debris
Even if everything looks connected, a damaged or dirty audio port can cause sound problems that no software fix will resolve. Checking this early saves time.
- Turn off your computer and unplug all cables.
- Look closely at the audio port on your computer and the connector on your cable, headphones, or speakers.
- Check for visible damage, such as bent pins, cracks, or a loose port.
- Check for dust, lint, or debris inside the port.
- If you see debris, use a can of compressed air to gently clean the port.
Warning: Never use water, cleaning sprays, or a damp cloth on any port. Always power off the computer fully before cleaning.
- Reconnect your audio device and test the sound.
If you see physical damage to the port or connector and cleaning does not help, contact Dell Technical Support to explore your repair options. If the port looks fine, continue to Step 4.
Step 4: Reinstall or update audio (Realtek or Cirrus) drivers
Audio driver issues are a common cause of sound problems.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device (for example, Realtek Audio) and select one of the following:
- Update driver
- Uninstall device, then restart the computer
- Alternatively, download the latest driver from Dell Drivers & Downloads.
Restart the computer and test the audio.
If the issue persists, continue to Step 5.
Step 5: Update your BIOS and chipset drivers
You have already tried updating your audio driver. The next layer to check is your BIOS (the firmware that controls how your computer's hardware works) and your chipset driver (which manages communication between the processor, memory, and other components). Both can affect audio performance when they are out of date.
- Go to Dell Drivers & Downloads.
- Enter your Service Tag or let Dell detect your product automatically.
- Look for available updates in the BIOS and Chipset categories.
- Download and install each update, following the on-screen instructions.
- Restart your computer after installation.
Note: If your BIOS is already on the latest version, try resetting it to factory defaults. This can clear settings that may be affecting the audio. For instructions, see Dell BIOS Updates and Reset.
If the audio issue continues after updating your BIOS and chipset, continue to Step 6.
Step 6: Adjust Windows privacy and audio settings
Incorrect system settings can block access to audio devices or microphones.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Ensure that microphone access is enabled for the device and apps.
- Go to Settings > System > Sound:
- Confirm that the correct output device is selected
- Adjust volume levels
- Review App volume and device preferences for conflicts.
Test the audio again.
If the issue persists, continue to Step 7.
Step 7: Check for a software conflict with your audio service
On many Dell computers, the Realtek audio driver includes MaxxAudio software, powered by Waves Audio. If antivirus software on your computer blocks the MaxxAudio installer or its background service, audio may stop working even after a successful-looking driver install.
Here is how to check and resolve this:
- Open your antivirus software and check whether the following processes are being blocked or quarantined:
- Waves Audio Service
- WaveSvc64.exe or WavesSysSvc64.exe
- If any of these are blocked, add them to your antivirus exception list (sometimes called an "allow list" or "exclusions"), then restart your computer and test audio again.
Note: The steps for adding exceptions vary by antivirus software. Check your antivirus software's help documentation if you are not sure how to do this.
If the audio still does not work, continue to Step 8.
Step 8: Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
The integrated troubleshooter can automatically detect and fix audio issues.
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Select Troubleshoot under the output device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
After completion, test audio.
If the issue persists, continue to Step 9.
Step 9: Install pending Windows updates
Windows updates can include fixes for audio hardware compatibility, driver conflicts, and system stability. If there are pending updates on your computer, installing them may resolve the issue.
On Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If updates are available, select Download & install.
- Restart your computer when prompted, then test your audio.
If installing Windows updates did not resolve the issue, continue to Step 10.
Step 10: Use Windows System Restore
If your audio was working fine before and stopped recently, for example, after installing new software, a driver, or an update, System Restore can take your computer back to a point in time when audio was working. This does not affect your personal files, but it does undo recently installed programs and system changes.

After completing System Restore, test your audio. If the issue persists, continue to Step 11.
Step 11: Reset your computer to factory settings
If all the steps above have not resolved the audio issue and your hardware diagnostic test (run in Step 7 of the Audio Troubleshooting page) passed without errors, the issue is most likely caused by a deeper software conflict on your computer. A factory reset restores Windows to its original state and removes all installed software and settings.
Important: A factory reset removes all personal data, applications, and files from your computer. Back up everything you want to keep, documents, photos, videos, and other important files, before you begin.
Select your operating system for instructions:
After the reset is complete, download and install the latest drivers from Dell Drivers & Downloads to make sure your audio hardware is set up correctly from the start.
